Network systems security is of the utmost importance as more and more commerce is conducted over the Internet and hackers have become increasingly more sophisticated and ruthless. Those who want a career in information systems as a network security specialist will plan, coordinate and implement an organization's information security to protect their systems against hackers.

Network security administrators educate users about computer security, install security software, monitor networks and respond to cyber attacks. The responsibilities of computer network security specialists have increased in recent years as cyber attacks have become more common and valuable personal and company information has come under unprecedented attack.

Security specialists make judgments on a system's vulnerability, and recommendations to increase the security of company computer systems. They may also be called upon to:

  • Establish disaster recovery strategies
  • Develop new antivirus software to keep hackers out and systems virus-free
  • Monitor the network for security breaches
  • Get the system up and running and recover information if there has been a breach
  • Gather data and evidence to be used in prosecuting cyber crime

With additional education and increasingly more responsible work experience, a career in information systems security can lead to an IT management position, even up to Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) of a company.
