Is a career as an electronics technician right for me?

Electronics technicians are people who have a natural interest in how things work. They're good at taking things apart and putting them back together.

What's the job outlook?

Job opportunities abound in the electronics technology field, with positions available in everything from telephone systems operation to computer and office machine repair. There's a growing need for employees who specialize in home entertainment equipment and commercial and industrial electronic equipment, as well. Individuals with advanced training can go on to become specialists who work with other technicians to diagnose especially difficult problems or consult with engineering experts to design equipment and develop maintenance procedures.

What will I do with my education?

Graduates of Heald's electronics technology program pursue rewarding careers, working with equipment including televisions, radars, industrial equipment controls, computers, telephone systems and medical diagnostic equipment. You'll perform job roles ranging from electronics technician and field service technician to manufacturing technician.

In this line of work, you might work with engineering experts or other technicians to develop laboratory tests, calibrate and operate instruments, make calculations or repair equipment.

According to industry analysts, network security is one of the fastest growing fields in information technology, due to the increase in network vulnerability and security threats. Data theft and other unauthorized access to computer systems and websites can be enormously detrimental to a company's success. Executives from all types of companies are reporting that information technology specialists with security expertise are highly valued, because safeguarding systems is a mission critical role.

What will I do with my education?

Graduates of Heald's network security program pursue rewarding careers in a variety of positions, including information security specialist, database security specialist, web application security specialist, LAN administrator, junior network administrator and technical support specialist. You'll also be well-prepared to pursue the following technical certifications: CompTIA A+, Network+, Linux+, Security+, Microsoft® Certified Professional and Microsoft® Certified Desktop Support Technician.

As a network security specialist, you'll be considered an expert in encryption, authentication and client and server security. You'll likely be responsible for configuring firewalls, recovering and backing up critical business data, and using intrusion detection techniques to detect hacking activities. No matter which position you hold, your Heald degree will help prepare you for great success in the network security field.
